Designing a Scalable Notification System in Laravel

As a backend engineer working with Laravel in production, I've encountered my fair share of challenges when it comes to designing a scalable notification system. One of the most significant problems we faced was handling a high volume of notifications via email, SMS, and push with high throughput and reliability.

The Problem

In our production environment, we were experiencing frequent timeouts and failures when sending notifications. The issue was exacerbated by the fact that we were sending notifications synchronously, which was causing a significant bottleneck in our application. We needed a solution that would allow us to queue notifications, handle channel separation, implement retry handling, and manage user preferences.

The Solution

To address these challenges, we implemented a notification system that utilized Laravel's built-in queueing system, channel separation, and retry handling. We also implemented rate limiting to prevent overwhelming our notification providers. Additionally, we developed a user preference management system that allowed users to customize their notification settings.

Queueing Notifications

We started by queueing notifications using Laravel's Illuminate\Contracts\Queue\ShouldQueue interface. This allowed us to offload the notification sending process to a separate queue worker, freeing up our main application to handle other tasks.

Channel Separation

We implemented channel separation by creating separate queues for each notification channel (email, SMS, push). This allowed us to prioritize notifications and handle channel-specific failures more efficiently.

Retry Handling

We implemented retry handling using Laravel's Illuminate\Contracts\Queue\ShouldQueue interface and the --tries option when running the queue worker. This allowed us to retry failed notifications a specified number of times before considering them failed.

Rate Limiting

We implemented rate limiting using Laravel's Illuminate\Cache\RateLimiting\Limit class. This allowed us to limit the number of notifications sent per minute, preventing us from overwhelming our notification providers.

User Preference Management

We developed a user preference management system that allowed users to customize their notification settings. This included the ability to opt-out of specific notification channels or customize the frequency of notifications.
